RoLu Nebbiolo

$850.00

It is a composition of mineral flavors, with cocoa accents and a refined texture. It is soft and delicate on the palate and at the same time contains a sumptuous Mexican dark chocolate character. Its elegance seems soft but in reality it is rough, firm and precise, deep and extensive, easily activating all the senses that inspire us to continue talking spontaneously about each note as we taste this wine, and its flavors definitely take us back to the terroir that emanated it, the San Vicente Valley, Mexico.

The grapes for this wine are harvested in San Vicente, Baja California, Mexico, where the winery is located. For this wine, the grapes have been left to ferment for 14 days to allow them to come into contact with the must and form soft and elegant tannins that blend with the flavors of the barrel and have a delicate and distinguished texture when consumed.

The name RoLu is a play on the owner's name: Luis Rodriguez. RoLu Blend is a blend of red grapes Tempranillo, Nebbiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested from different vineyards located in

San Vicente Valley in Baja California, Mexico. RoLu is Luis Rodriguez's first commercial release. Luis is proud to make a wine with grapes from his homeland and share it with the people he loves most in Mexico.

Mexican-born Napa Valley winemaker Luis Rodriguez recently released his first wine from a vineyard he planted in northern Baja California in Mexico. RoLu Vino Tinto, a high-end red blend comprised of Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, and Cabernet Sauvignon, is only sold in Mexico and distributed by Vinos Wagner. Rodriguez, winemaker at Caymus Vineyards in Rutherford, Napa Valley, grew up in Mexico and moved to the United States as a teenager seeking a better education and work. In 1990, Chuck Wagner, Caymus’ viticulturist, winemaker, and owner, hired the 19-year-old Rodriguez to work on the winery’s bottling line. Over the years, Rodriguez worked his way up to the winemaking assistant position he now holds. Chuck Wagner says, "Luis rose through the ranks because of his love of wine. I consider him one of the best winemakers in the world today, an unsung hero of this highly competitive fine wine industry." In 2001, Rodriguez traveled to Mexico, where on a whim he purchased a half-ton of Tempranillo grapes from a small producer in San Vicente, a region located in northern Baja California. He soon found himself planting 20 acres of vines on the same site.

Although many commercial vineyards have been planted north of San Vicente in what is known as "the Napa Valley of Mexico," Rodriguez preferred the cooler climate where the vines were placed.
“The vineyard is in the middle of nowhere,” Rodriguez said. “It’s identified only by the 1-kilometer coordinate of Highway 105.5. I decided to include that on the label.” The wine, aged for 16 months in French oak, is rich and powerful, with layer upon layer of expressive fruit. The name RoLu is a play on the winemaker’s first and last names. Although his winery is very basic, Luis made sure to have everything on hand to make good wine. There are currently no tours available of his humble abode—which consists of a few stainless steel tanks and a small, temperature-controlled barrel room, stocked with a handful of 225-liter French oak barrels—but who’s to say what the future holds. For now, he splits his time between Caymus and RoLu, sharing some of the responsibilities of his new winery venture with his son, Luis Jr.
